Can't open Excel 2010 file from desktop

I have Excel 2010 on an XP computer.

When I click "domains.xlsx" from my desktop Excel 2010 will open but not my file. The only way to open it is from inside the File tab.  

This happens with all my Excel files including my .xls files.

Could I get some help here.
