Excel 2010 Chart Titles are malformed when opened

I work on large excel files at my facility and I find that when I open certian files from the network that chart titles will have an additional line break added randomly in the title and a random amount of characters truncated from the end of the title of every chart in the workbook.

It is an extreme hassle to constantly have to correct the titles as they each contain different information.

Each workbook has a sheet with a dataset that is about 50k rows and 30 columns, and the charts are used to graphically display data from select columns.

I've examined the workbook and any and all add-ons that could be active when the files are opened, but it doesn't seem to have any effect. I've even opened the affected files without any other add-ons or files open and the behavior still persists.

Am I missing something?

Excel 2010 (Version 14.0.6129.5000) 32-Bit, part of Office Professional Plus 2010.

EDIT1: I forgot to mention the files in question are .xls files originally from 2000. The 255 character limit isn't the issue, because every time you open the file, save it, close it, then open it again you lose 2 characters from each chart title and gain an extra line randomly in the title.

Additionally, when you open the file without making any changes manually (also happens in safe mode) and attempt to close the file it will prompt you if you want to save your changes, despite having consciously made no changes to the workbook.
