I can open personal.xlsb on one computer, but not another: 'Excel cannot open the file personal.xlsb because the file format or file extension is not valid.'

Hi all.  On my desktop computer I've added a file PERSONAL.XLSB to a folder (`D:\gdrive\bin\Excel`).  I have then specified Excel to look for XLSB files in this folder on startup.  When Excel opens, Excel reads this XLSB file as desired.  I am trying to repeat this process on a second computer, but when I open Excel on that computer, it displays the error message:

> Excel cannot open the file personal.xlsb because the file format or file extension is not valid.  Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

Any ideas how to resolve this?

**More Info**

* Both systems are running Win 10, Excel 2013.

* I've tried all the suggestions here, namely:

> Navigate to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View and uncheck all the 3 options:

--Enable Protected View for Files originating from the Internet.

--Enable Protected View for Files located in potentially unsafe locations.

--Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments.

> Also, click on Privacy Options in the left-hand pane and make sure to uncheck the 4th option Check Microsoft Office documents that are from or link to suspicious Web sites.

* I also tried these suggestions, namely:

> Clear the files from Excel startup folders from the locations mentioned below:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLStart (C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\XLStart in case of 64-bit O/S).
C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Thanks in advance.

Excel Data Labels - Value from Cells

$
0
0

I created a chart and linked the data labels to a series of cells, as 2013 allows in Value From Cells option. I pre-select e.g. 100 data rows even though it initially contains values in 10 of them

When I reopen the workbook and add x and y value and a new label (where I left empty cells to do so) that data point 'icon' comes on to the graph, but the data label doesn't automatically populate. When I recheck the data labels, Format Data Labels, "Value from Cells" is still checked and the cell range is still correct and includes the cell with the new label.

I can select "Reset Label Text", uncheck "Value from Cells" re-check and then it appears. I Save and Close.  The issue reappears for the next new data point.

The problem exists in Excel 2013 and Excel 2016. See additional "complaints" here:

Excel crashing cpustack on large spreadsheet (40mb)

[User PC Spec]
Dell Optiplex 3050 (i5 4 core, 8gb DDR4, 500gb HDD, discrete GPU)

User imports data from SAP into Excel 2013 (15.0.4569.1506) by copy/paste.
User must change entire columns formatting. User uses autocorrect fix fix data.
Up to 10 cells selected, autocorrect balloon tip next to cell is used.

Excel will occasionally process the entire selection in <1sec. In other cases (reproducible) it will exhibit the following behaviour:
Change one cell (autocorrect)
pause > 2 sec
change another cell
change another cell
pause >5 sec
change another cell
hard lock (unrecoverable)

At this hardlock point, excel can be using up to 600MB of RAM. More Likely averaging 380Mb
I generated a crashdump from the frozen process Excel.exe via task manager.

I reproduced the fault on another machine (Dell Presicion 5520, i7, 32gb DDR4, Nvidia quadro p1000, 512gb nvme m.2 SSD)
In WinDBG (x64) I get the following - I do not know where the fault lies and my efforts to find the cause are subsequently postede below.   I am using the following symbols .sympath srv*https://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

Running an OLE application in Windows 10

Hi everyone,

I have a OLE application that allows Excel to push sales data into an ERP called Made2Manage.  Basically the salesperson puts the data into an Excel spreadsheet and once complete, they press a 'submit' button that runs a maco which makes a call to M2MOLE.exe which places the data into the M2M application.

This process worked very well in Windows 7, but it seems to have run into rights issues in Windows 10.   The only workaround I can find is to run both Excel and M2M as Administrator, but seeing as how "run as Administrator" runs in it's own login space, the users can't load/save files on any shared drives.

Is there a way to find out where the rights issues are and permit this process to flow as it did in Windows 7?  Since my users can load or save files, the 'run as Administrator' option is a no-go.

Thanks in advance.

Multi user open excel on network drive will not prompt "read only" message

Hi all,

Our company upgrade PCs from win7 to win10 recently, but we found that excel issue below.

When User A open excel on network drive and edit something then click save, but it will prompt "The file "XXX.xls" may have been changed by another user since you last saved it.  In that case, what do you want to do?  Save a copy or Overwrite Changes?"

And we found that User B can open that excel directly instead of "file in use" when that excel already opened by User A.

Anyone can advise?

Thank you in advance.

hi there is there a formula or macro available that could help auto populate / calculate PBD (pay back day taken) within the "Pay Back" tab based on the data within tab roster 2020? ideally we would want the dates and name of person to be listed.

names are listed column a - row 21 - 29

date ranges are listed (per cell) and grouped by month from Column e - onwards

happy to attach the working copy if this helps

Integrate Excel survey with Office products for Automated Reporting

Hi All,

I have a simple quantitative survey (4 column, 10 rows) that I'll send to about 100 of my clients. Hence I don't think I need a proper Access DB.

I would like to know which would be the best approach to automate the process of gathering data and reporting.

My understanding is that the flow between office products may be:

- Survey compilation in Sharepoint/Powerapps/Infopath;

- Data analytics in Excel/Power BI;

- Automated reporting to the user that compiled the survey.

I am perfectly confident with Excel, PowerPivot, PowerBI, but I have no experience in automating data gathering and reporting to the respective client.

Want to know if someone could suggest the easiest products to use in order to reach this goal.

Thanks

Hello,

We have received an Excel 2013 document, in this document they use drop-down menu's.
We have Excel 2007, and unfortunately we don't see this drop-down menu's.

Can it be possible that Excel 2013 uses a new function that Excel 2007 doesn't  support?
Or can this be solved.

I did check the Internet but didn't find a solution.

Excel 2016 slow to open files on Window 10 machine when you are not an admin

$

We recently rolled out a small pilot group of Win10/Office 2016 (coming from Win7/Office 2010).  Using the new version of Excel on Win10 takes about 10 seconds longer to open files compared to the old version (or the new version on Win7).  It seems more evident with .xlsm files.  Here is what I tried/ruled out:

Office 16 32 vs. 64 bit behaved the same on Windows 10

Removed any links to files and cleaned up formatting, and name ranges

Copied the file locally to take the network out of the mix

Disabled all add-ins

Installed Office 16 on a Win7 machine and it was faster to open

What I discovered is that if you run Excel 2016 on a Windows 10 machine as an administrator, the file opens as expected.  Since none of our users are admins on their machines, this is going to be a huge problem.  Has anyone run into this yet?

I should also mention that the Win7 (32-bit) computers are about 3 years old and the Win10 (64-bit) computers are brand new.

Thanks!

Working with a Pivot Table when Data Connection is Removed?

$

Hi all,

We have a pivot table that pulls information from a data cube. We'd like to have several users working with the spreadsheet not to have connection to the cube, but still be able to work with the current "snapshot" data on the pivot table.

However, once removing the data connection, we can no longer use filter/sort options on the pivot table and get an error stating that  the data connection has been removed.

Is there any way to keep the snapshot of the pivot table and still be able to manipulate the data as it is in-state?

Unwanted Date Group filters less than (date)

When grouping by dates in pivot table, unwanted group filters with dates less than and greater than show up in report filters including slicers. Ex <1/1/2018 and greater than 12/31/2019. Data in pivot table does not have any dates less than 1/1/2018 or data greater than 12/31/2019. Unable to delete these filters. Appreciate someone from Microsoft answering this question as question has been posted before in community with absolutely no correct answer.

Formulas are updated after a query refresh

$

Hi folks,

I'm experiencing an issue after performing a query refresh. I'm using Excel 2010.

Upon data entry of various customer data, I perform a query against that data for one specific customer. In that table, I store that data so that I can execute the various formulas to determine the various performance measures we track.

Attached is the design of the sheet that contains the formulas. As you can see it is in order etc. (this goes spans down to 200 rows in order).

When I perform the refresh, some of the formulas are updated - like some rows have been removed, without removing the rows. This is the before query state

What occurs upon data refresh

So instead of a continue sequential reference flow, the formula is updated and skips by the number of new records from the query. This always occurs at the last known result.

At the moment, I manually update the sheet to include the references that have been updated.

How do I go about preventing the update obliterating my formulas?

Many thanks,

P.S. Attachments can't be inserted as I've not been verified I've inserted a drop box link below with the intended post.

Password Removal Excel 2010

I have an spreadsheet which is password protected. Not an issue because I know the password. The issue is, when I want to send it to another person, I don't need the spreadsheet/workbook protected because the receipient will need to alter it for their use and this is being sent to many users. W/ Excel 2003 the ability to remove the password protection feature was easy, Tools>Options>Remove Protection but I cannot find that w/ Excel 2010. I have gone to File>Info and File>Options but nothing allows me to "remove" the password.

Ideas?

I am trying to unprotect a 2010 excel file. Every time I click the review tab, the changes tab, and the unprotect sheet tab and put in my protectedpassword (twice) it changes correctly to "protect file" but I still cannot open the file without puting in the password. I have tried several times, click save and exit the file. Everytime I call up the file again it reads"unprotect file". I have this file in my dropbox on my desktop and not on my hard drive. Is this the issue?
