Hi All,

I am getting following error when adding Data validation to cell :

"The list source must be a delimited list or a reference to a single row or column excel 2007"

I am adding proper delimited list as reference to cell for data validation for example :

=Sheet1!$B$2,Sheet1!$B$4,Sheet1!$B$6,Sheet1!$B$9,Sheet1!$B$12,Sheet1!$B$14,Sheet1!$B$17,Sheet1!$B$20

but still getting above error.

I have also created Named range reference and adding that for data validation but still same error.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Formula tooltip covers column names

Hi,

I sometimes write very long Excel formulas. I like to troubleshoot them by clicking on the name of the formula and seeing which cells are involved. But when I do this, Excel covers the names of the columns with a tooltip (see below. You can't see the column names between B & K) making it hard to tell if everything is correct. I would really like to see both the tooltip & the column names at the same time. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

Does anyone know how to resolve the error message "User name or password is invalid" for PowerPivot 2012?

The same user name and password for the machine DOES work on another machine, just not this machine.

The user name and password for another end-user DOES NOT work on this machine.

We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling three times without success.

Excel arrow keys stop working (NOT SCROLL LOCK)

Excel Office Pro Plus 2013 on windows 7 64 bit.

This has happened since I loaded it.. older excel never has this issue on same host.

When I am working in a spreadsheet and moving around with arrow keys.. they stop working randomly.

It is NOT scroll lock... I can turn scroll lock on and off no effect.

IF I change to another tab then back to the same tab .. the arrow keys work again!!!

This happens in many spreadsheets... seems like the larger they are the worse it it.. VERY annoying and makes it unusable!!

I have all the latest patches and have rebooted .. this has been going on since I loaded excel.. I was hoping a patch would fix it..

but it keeps happening randomly...

ANY ideas?

Creating a table to rank & formulate a series of numbers

I'm trying to create a table which will give the result as shown above.

Basically there are upto 3 or 4 separate selections of 4 numbers each. First selected is worth 4 points. 2nd is worth 3 points & so on.

What i'd like to achieve is a list of the selected numbers ranked according to their value based on the total "points". As above "7" is the highest ranked number with 10 "points".

I'm sure its quite easy & think i've done something similar in the past, but am drawing a real blank at the moment.

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

Powerpivot data connection will not save the password

$

I'm trying to create a Powerpivot workbook with data that users can refresh themselves before analysis.  We don't have Powerpivot data refresh in Sharepoint active, so I can't make use of that service.

When I create a Powerpivot data connection to SQL server using SQL Server Authentication (unchanging read-only username and password), and checking the box to save the password, the connection works fine for refreshing the data as long as I leave the workbook open.

If I close the file and re-open it, the password is gone from the data connection and the user cannot refresh the data.

I've tried configuring the data connection with the SQL native client provider and the SQL OLEDB provider and I see exactly the same results.

The connection string gets built with Persist Security Info=True and the Password shows up as hidden text (dots).  It stays this way through refreshes as long as the workbook is open.  However, once I close the file and re-open it, the connection string no longer has the Password parameter listed at all, not even as hidden text.  Persist Security Info is still there and set to True.  As might be expected, the connection string does not have the information needed to access the SQL Server instance.

This type of connection string using SQL Server Authentication still works fine with the password saved when used directly as an Excel data connection, or when used as a data source in Reporting Services.  It's only Powerpivot where the password gets blown away.

Is there a workaround for this issue?

Excel 2016 Unhide Column Shortcut CTRL+Shift+) not working Office Professional Plus 2016, Windows 10

Hi all,

Excel keyboard shortcut CTRL+Shift+) to unhide column suddenly stopped working.

I checked the settings in Language > Advanced Settings > Between Input Languages > Change Key Sequence > Switch Keyboard Layout > set to Not Assigned - so this is ok.

Column width not set to zero.

Windows 10 - Office Excel 2016 version.

When I try to unhide using the keyboard shortcut, the excel would stop working and restart :(

Tried restarting my PC as well.

Tried deleting files and folders in C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel

No add-ins enabled.

Tried using excel in safe mode - still not working.

Checked the last update, I have Version 1712 (Build 8827.2148) - I think most of the changes apply to Office 365 only - I have Professional Plus 2016.

Don't want to reinstall my office as it will reset all my settings :(

Any ideas how I can get my keyboard shortcut to work again?

How to use an Excel file in a cloud storage service as a data source for another Excel file in the same service?

I have a "master" Excel file in my cloud storage service (BOX). I want to create other Excel files that have a live data connection to the master in order to provided secure filtered views.  When I set up the query from other courses in the Excel file how to I specify the path to the master?  If I browse to the file via Box Drive on my computer, the people who need to use the filtered files can't refresh the data because the connection string uses a location on my C drive.  How do I set the query up to point to my master Excel file in Box?  I tried editing the connection string replacing the file path value with the URL, but that didn't work.

There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what you are trying to accomplish.

Non-existant link won't be destroyed / can't be found

We have a bit of linking problems for multiple workbooks, we're also switching to O365 which doesn't help.

One user in particular "has" a link in one of her workbooks that's broken, won't be deleted normally, and can sometimes crash the Excel window. The main issue I see is where the link is going is to someone else's OutLook attachments, BRANSN is not the user having the issue. Using "Edit Link" -> "Break Link" does nothing and a search through the workbook for '[' to start a link isn't found either.

This is the error receieved when trying to get the source of the link

Really not sure where to go from here

Two finger gesture after grouping cells crashes Excel 2016

Issue exists in Excel 2016 16.0.4849.1000 64-bit
Windows 10 1903 18362.387

To replicate:
Create a new workbook or open an existing workbook
Select a number of columns
Group the columns (Data -> Group)
Locate the cursor in the new area above the columns (the gray grouping accordion)
Make a two-finger scroll gesture
Excel will crash

Hardware Acceleration on/off - still crashes
Two finger scroll on/off - still crashes
wired mouse - scrolling does not crash

We cannot narrow down the root cause, it currently happens for both grouped and subtotaled cells (Left hand accordion area)

Office 365 - Excel - Print Preview not available

$

Hi,

I am using Office 365.

Recently, I started getting Print Preview Not available error ONLY in Excel. This happens when I use the Quick Aceess toolbar on top left. The following are the scenarios

1. I open a new file which was not recently opened. It will display the print preview. However, if I try to do anything within print preview window - like zoom or scroll - then the preview disappears and I get the error "print preview not available"

2. for some file at times the preview doesn't appear but at times it appears - and then when I try something within preview it stops and gives the above error.

3. When I select printer as "Microsoft print to PDF" - the print preview is displayed. And then it disappears with the error when I try any option within print preview.

I recently accidentally selected this : Page Layout - Theme Colors - Office 2007 - 2010.But when Irealized what I had chosen I changed the selection back to Office. I am not sure if this has caused any issue.

I tried setting my printer back as default printer. For a moment the print preview worked and then the same problem started.

I tried Print Preview in Word - it works fine.

Please help.

Excel Memory Problem

I have an excel spreadsheet containing water level data collected on a 15 minute time step over several years.  The data come in pairs with the pair consisting of a time stamp and the value of water level at that time.  I have around 400,000 rows with two columns, column 1 is the date/time, and column 2 is the value.  The file is 38 meg in size and was working fine until yesterday when I added a blank column to the sheet and now it takes 10 to 20 minutes to load and usually locks up after making a few changes to the workbook once it is open.  It used to take 20 to 30 seconds to open.  Sometimes it will even take an hour or two to open.  Even just shifting a blank cell over can then lock the spreadsheet up.  Also, the file is now taking up 53 GB in memory (yes I said GBytes).  Fortunately I have 192 GB of RAM.  I have similar spreadsheets with the same type of data and with double the number of rows that this spreadsheet has, and I don't have any problems with them.  After you try to open the spreadsheet, you can watch the RAM that the program is grabbing slowly rise by going to Task Manager and Processes.  Over that 10 to 20 or 60 minute period while the spreadsheet is trying to open, the ram that Excel is using is slowly climbing up until it gets to around 53 GB.  It is only using 3% CPU during this time

The file has a 2 tabs.  The first tab is a sheet with the data in it, and a plot of the data on the sheet.  The second tab is just a plot of the data with better formatting.  There are no equations or calculations being performed in the spreadsheet.  Its just a pretty simple sheet.  I need to evaluate this data.  Any suggestions on making this file work?  It seems to be some sort of memory management issue that has attached itself to the spreadsheet.  It seems that every time I try to open the spreadsheet, it wants more RAM.  Even if I reboot my computer, the next time I try to open the spreadsheet it seems to want 2 or 3 more GB of RAM than the last time I opened it, even though I have not been able to make any changes to the spreadsheet.

I have tried opening this spreadsheet on other computers in the office, and I get the same results, although Excel does not seem to grab as much RAM on the computers that don't have as much RAM as I have.  It always seems to stop at 90 to 95% of the available RAM, but eventually opens.

I had a similar problem on an Excel spreadsheet 3 or 4 months back.  I was never able to resolve the problem, but one day the problem just disappeared.  I assumed that it must have been fixed by a Windows or Office update.  But now it is back, on a different spreadsheet.

This thing is killing me, my client need to have this data evaluated.  Any help would be appreciated.

Running an OLE application in Windows 10

$

Hi everyone,

I have a OLE application that allows Excel to push sales data into an ERP called Made2Manage.  Basically the salesperson puts the data into an Excel spreadsheet and once complete, they press a 'submit' button that runs a maco which makes a call to M2MOLE.exe which places the data into the M2M application.

This process worked very well in Windows 7, but it seems to have run into rights issues in Windows 10.   The only workaround I can find is to run both Excel and M2M as Administrator, but seeing as how "run as Administrator" runs in it's own login space, the users can't load/save files on any shared drives.

Is there a way to find out where the rights issues are and permit this process to flow as it did in Windows 7?  Since my users can load or save files, the 'run as Administrator' option is a no-go.

Thanks in advance.

Office Web Apps

We have recently put our users on office 365 with E1 License.    Users are having issues with excel files opening or being able to print.   We received a .xls file and when you try to preview it outlook web app gives the error. "There is something in your workbook that we don't understand. Try opening and saving the workbook in a newer version of Excel..    Users only have access to the online apps and do not have excel on their desktops to be able to download an open in the desktop version of excel.     I need a solution to this.   There is no option to print so they can not save as a PDF.

I have even tried to save to One Drive and open from the excel app and I get the same message.
