.xlam AddIn stopped loading late October 2016

We have developed an Excel application in VBA which is used by around 250 users in 10 companies, including our own.

It is distributed as an .xlam file, the code is written in VBA.

Around the last week of October, the .xlam file will not load into Excel for users at 3 companies.  It was previously working fine for all users prior to end-October – the exact date it stopped working is slightly unclear.

It has stopped working on both Win7/Excel2010, as well as Win10/Excel2016(O365), but has not stopped working for *everyone* using these platforms, only three individual companies who use the software.  The remaining 7 other companies have not had any issues.  In fact, we cannot replicate the error in-house.  We therefore believe the error is related to a Windows or Excel automatic update, but cannot verify this.

We have been unable to trap the error to see why it fails to load, despite various attempts to do so.  CTRL-Break does not work.

Any brilliant ideas?

Personal.xlsb that worked in excel 2013 causes Excel 2016 to not startup

I have a complex personal.xlsb file  (it accesses serial COM ports and has many userforms) that works fine with Excel 32 bit 2007 and 2013 on any computer I have used it.  When I try to use this personal.xlsb file on certain computers running 32 bit  Excel 2016, Excel freezes on startup ,  and shows that it is trying to load the Solver.XLAM and just stays there forever trying to load the add-in.

The personal.xlsb file is located in the 2 standard  XLSTART folders:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\XLSTART

C:\Users\{User Account Name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

I tried going to  Options > Add-ins then un-checking all listed Add-Ins, restart Excel again, but Excel still hangs on startup as long as my personal.xlsb file is in the XLSTART folder.

I also tried a suggestion from another post  from this forum to go to Trust Center > Protected View and un-check the 3 "Enable Protected View" options.  This did no good. Excel still locks up on the startup screen.  Again, none of this happens on Excel 2007 or 2013, just Excel 2016 on certain computers.     Any help appreciated.

IFERROR(LARGE(Data[Cashbook Balance Date],COUNTIF(Data[Cashbook Balance Date],">="&'Cash Book '!D1)),INDEX(Data[Cashbook Balance],MATCH('Cash Book '!D1,Data[Cashbook Balance Date],-1)))

Hi all

I am trying to use the formula above but it's not working as I would like it to. I have two sheets - A Data Sheet and A Cash book Sheet:

User enters transactions on  Data Sheet which has columns including  Bank Code Column (can enter multiple bank codes), Running Cash Book balance (for each bank code) and Cash book balance date (dates can be repeated and may not be in order).

On the Cash book sheet, user can only select start date and bank code and the sheet should calculate monthly totals for the bank code and start date specified - drawing from Data sheet. The formula above should draw the opening balance from the Data Sheet - Cash Book balance for the date specified or next lowest date.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated:

Hi!

I'm trying to link tables from Book1.xlsx sheet to Book2.xlsx sheet.

Everything works fine in 2016. As I update table in Book1 sheet and refresh connection in Book2 it updates table.

When I try and open Book2 on 2010 client and try refresh connection it gives error:

Initialization of the data source failed. Check the database server or contact your database administrator. Make sure the external database is still available, and then try the operation again. If you see this message again, create a new data source to connect to the database.

and after that:

The following data range failed to refresh:
ExternalData_1
Continue to refresh all?

Excel spreadsheet slow to open and save

$

I have a 35MB Excel spreadsheet with approx 10 worksheets. It looks like one sheet in particular is taking a long time to load and save. The worksheet is approx 80k rows and is full of formulas. I have changed the Calculation options from Automatic to Manual with no success. The department who is relying on this worksheet has several other Excel spreadsheets of smaller size (in MB and formulas) that are also taking long to open and save (approx 15 - 20 min).

Hardware and network are not an issue. This occurs on Win XP SP3 or Win 7 machines. Single core or multi core. 2GB or 8GB of RAM. On a network share or local desktop, the result is pretty much the same.

Any thoughs on what to look for to remedy the situation? According to the department head these docs are going to grow in complexity and size.

Thanks,

- Gymmbo

Twisting an existing Macro

$

I have a macro which enters date and time to corresponding cell once a data is entered in any cell in column B.

The macro is as under:

Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
    Dim rInt As Range
    Dim rCell As Range
    Dim tCell As Range

    Set rInt = Intersect(Target, Range("B:B"))
If Not rInt Is Nothing Then
        For Each rCell In rInt
            Set tCell = rCell.Offset(0, 2)
            If IsEmpty(tCell) Then
                tCell = Now
                tCell.NumberFormat = "mmm d, yyyy hh:mm"
            End If
        Next
    End If
End Sub

I want to change it to behave it so as when the value in any cell in column B as "Done", then only enter DAte and time in corresponding cell.

If this can be done, it will be great help.

Formula is there, but is not calculating for Link

I'm creating an audit workbook. I have 2 other workbooks which contain thousands of rows of data in dozens of tabs. Certain key values in both spreadsheets should match, but don't. And it's not a straight 1:1. In some cases, value x in book A = value g+h+I in book B.

So in my audit workbook, I've mapped all these values that are supposed to match. Now, the idea is that you drag in the tabs from the 2 workbooks and my audit workbook will display all these values side by side that are supposed to match, and you can see which ones don't.

Of course, Excel doesn't like you linking to tabs that don't exist in your workbook yet. But I've managed to do it, at least, I've managed to get the formulas in to the cells. Without the tabs dragged in, they display #ref!, which is fine and expected.

My problem is that when I drag in the tabs, the values don't update and calculate. Auto-calculate is on. If I click in the formula and hit enter, then it calculates, but the thing is, I need to lock that formula, so now it won't let me click in the formula.

No, I can not simply keep the files separate and link to an external source. The filenames are always variable and can not be changed, so I can't write formulas to point to files whose names are not constant.  I need to be able to drag the tabs in, and I need those formulas to pick it up.

Excel distorts image when printing

This issue has been going on with Excel for many years, but it is seriously time for Microsoft to fix it. We are now into Excel 2013 and it is STILL a problem! The issue is that when you place an image in an Excel spreadsheet and then print it (or even print preview it) then it appears squashed. While the width stays the same, the height gets shorter thus changing the ratio of the image. I have this issue on any computer, using any printer. The issue does not happen in Word, only in Excel. Microsoft it's time to get off the pot and fix this issue!

IF function unable to read from cells whose results are as a result of a formula themselves

I am trying to use the following formula when someone's age equals a certain value:

=IF(E72<20,O40,IF(E72<25,O41,IF(E72<30,O42,IF(E72<35,O43,IF(E72<40,O43,IF(E72<45,O44,IF(E72<50,O45,IF(E72<55,O46,"False"))))))))

The formula works fine if I manually enter the number into cell E72 e.g. 23.

However E72 is itself worked out by a formula and my IF function only gives the false value.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How to speed up to open or process huge size Excel Files?

$

Dear Excel Expert,

Finance Dept usually will have excel files that have thousands or over 50000 rows in the excel spreadsheet, which cause the file to be over big such as over 100MB.

Currently, our client is using Office 2010 32 Bit with the SP2 service pack installed. however, when opening one 100MB excel files it will always take more than 1 minutes to process and it doesn't seem to be hardware issue as our computer are equipped with SSD with 8GB RAM and running i7 Processsor.

Is there any bug in office 2010 that cause this problem?

Thanks

Conditionally sum in Pivot across several columns?

$

I've set up a pivot table using Excel 2013 where the data contains (among others) 4 specific columns, TransactionType,TransactionDirection,TransactionDirection,Amount, where I would like the pivot to summarize as follows:

SUM(Amount)
WHERE (((TransactionType = Payment) AND (TransactionDirection = Credit))
OR ((TransactionType = Interests) AND (TransactionDirection = Debit)))
GROUP BY TransactionDate

Is this possible to achieve in a standard pivot table? I can't find a way to combine the filters from two columns at  the same time.

Regards,

John
