Excel file save error: Someone else is working in right now. Please try again later.

When trying to save a modified Excel file, which has been opened from a network share, our users are receiving the following message:

Someone else is working in "\\domain.com\users\username\Document.xls" right now. Please try again later.

The clients that have been affected are Windows 7 clients, and the DFS share is being served from a Windows 2012 server. I have already confirmed that DFS replication has not been enabled, so it isn't trying to lock files for replication. I have also disabled any real-time scanning that is occurring on the client to make sure that the AV software wasn't locking the files. I did notice when viewing the list of Open Files from the server's Computer Management console that when a users experiences this issue the file appears to be opened 4 times. Three times it shows that it was opened in Read mode and the 4th instance shows an Open Mode of Write. Typically, a file which is working correctly should just show one instance with the Open Mode of Read+Write. None of these open instances are temporary files preceded with a ~.

Any thoughts?

error: "Cannot open PivotTable source file..." but I am working with only one standalone computer

$

I cannot determine the source of this error that is constant.

  1. The source referenced is not listed when I click "Edit Links"
  2. If I do a formula search for the file name in the ENTIRE workbook, nothing is found
  3. All files are on only ONE computer that is mine!  Windows 7

Now for background I often save my file under a new name:

  • suppose my original file is "Checking"
  • I then save it as CheckingXX in the same folder
  • then rename previous version of Checking to "Checking032814" to create a checkpoint backup that I move to my "backup" folder
  • finally I then rename CheckingXX to Checking
  • and then this file Checking is where the error occurs since it says:
  • cannot open PivotTable source file 'C:\.....\Checking032814'
  • but this file is not found anywhere in as I said in 1, 2, 3 above.

This is so frustrating; any help greatly appreciated

Excel 2013 very slow response

Hi All,

Greetings!!!

Recently my client just migrated Microsoft office 2003 to 2013.

Now I had facing one of the excel.xlsx file was having slow response issue, estimate 2 second per-action, example when I typing, copy paste, move by pressing left right up down button or using mouse to click and point rows column highlight and so forth.

Of cause the file size is about 2.8mb, column reach to HW, row reach to 64 and the file is store at the local C drive, there is not share file.

And I tried to install back excel 2003 or use excel 2010 to manage the same excel.xlsx file,  purely working fine.

Please advice.

Excel 2016 Pivot Table generates top 6 sales reps instead of top 5 sales reps

$

I have an Excel 2016 Pivot Table for which I have "Filter" > "Top 10" and actually selected the top 5 sales representatives. However, the result gives me 6 (SIX) topo sellers instead of just 5!!!!.

Not only that, I added a Pivot Chart and that chart also shows 6 top sellers (Most likely it’s because it follows the results of the filtering action which is wrong)

Note: Those top 5 sales representatives conform the source of information for a Mail Merge operation in Word, which currently is rendering excessive information, 6 people instead of 5.

Is there any way to make the pivot table truly gives me just the top 10 sellers?

Your wisdom and feedback will be highly appreciated.

Change Excel time interval for checking that a file is available for editing?

$

Situation: spreadsheets are being shared via on-premise SharePoint. (Yes, finally got some users actually using SP for collaboration!).

Problem: users are opening, or attempting to open the same spreadsheet and edit it at the same time; complaining when they get the "File In Use" dialog and unable to edit.

Excel is doing its thing, putting an internal lock on the file when the first person opens it. Subsequent users opening the file get the File In Use dialog. They click on View a read-only copy and check the Receive a notification when the server file is available. When the user with the lock on the file is done and closes the file, they don't get notified that it is available for about 10 minutes. I did read somewhere that 10 minutes is the timeout time, I assume this is a timer built into Excel when it checks the file locks again. Keep the network traffic down, etc.

Can this 10 minutes be changed? Registry setting perhaps? I understand that it would increase server and network load, but it would be nice to be able to change it on a per-user basis.

I also told them they could follow the document on SharePoint, or manually check the file out and back in, but, that isn't being received well.

Thanks,

Steven

Excel window opens but not visible on screen

Sometimes when I open an existing (or E-mail attached) Excel file it opens as a "window" but is outside of the area veiwed on screen. If I "Maximize" the sheet, I can then see the workbook on screen, but if I reduce to a window, it goes back off screen. I can see Data in the "Cell Location/Data Value" boxes and can change Cell Location using arrow, Home, & Page keys but cannot see the workbook. Is there a way to move the "window" size workbook  to the visible screen area using the keyboard since I can't see it to mouse over and drag it to center screen. This problem seems to have started when I started using multible screens about a year ago. Some E-mails I send with attached files get returned saying there is no file. I have to open the Excel file, save in a  "Maximize" view,  and resend. I use "Office 2007" at work.

Cannot move grouped objects in Excel 2016

It seems there might be a bug when grouping objects in the Excel 2016 version. The move handles do not appear when hovering over the edge of a group and thus I cannot move the group. See the below gifs to see what I am talking about.

Excel 2013:

In our office this occurs on all three computers with Excel 2016 64 bit installed.

Excel Row Height Fault - Office 365

$

Hi,

I am experiencing the (well documented for Office 2010) Row Height Fault - except that I'm running Office 365.

The fault appears as follows :

Open an Excel workbook.

Click on a tab - the sheet  displayed looks fine. Scroll down - lines below the initial visible screen lines are expanded to Excel max row height (409.6?).

I know the workaround (Select the whole spreadsheet, adjust row height) - but some of these workbooks contain 80 spreadsheets (and we have hundreds of workbooks) so the time taken for the workaround is untenable.

For clarity :

OS - Microsoft Windows 10 Pro  64-bit version

Version 10.0.10240 Hardware Extraction Layer 10.0.10240.16392

Intel Core i7-4770 CPU @3.40GHz  16GB Ram 64-bit

Office 365 Version 16.0.7167.2055

Excel Version 16.0.7127.1025 - 32bit

My question is - why does this fault occur and has MS proposed a fix (rather than a workaround) for the problem?

Is it something that can be fixed by editing the registry or could a VBA fix be implemented that will fix a whole workbook (rather than individual spreadsheets)?

Thanks

Error 1004 due to file not downloaded completely to the temporary folder (inconsistent)

Dear all,

I have a very weird since inconsistent problem and hope you can help me.

I have an excel file (Form.xlsm)  stored in SharePoint, which contains a macro to update a dropdown list in the file. When
the “update dropdown list” button is clicked, the macro downloads the master dropdown list which is saved as a separate file in SharePoint (without format) to the temporary folder of the user (saved as .xlsx).

The macro accesses the master list in the temporary folder and the values are copied into the dropdown sheet in the form itself. The mechanism itself works. Viewing access for the whole SharePoint Site was given to everyone except external users. <o:p></o:p>

The issue is the following: <o:p></o:p>

When the form is opened in SharePoint and the update button is clicked, everything works perfectly fine at all times. The masterlist is copied into the temporary folder and the update in the form itself is successful. <o:p></o:p>

Butwhen the form is downloaded e.g. to the desktop as a first step and the update button is clicked, it sometimes works, and sometimes does not work (inconsistent for the same user). If it does not work, an excel error message (1004) occurs after clicking the update button saying that the list is corrupted:

When I open the Masterlist_SG_ER file from the temporary folder, it can actually not be read, it seems like the file has not been downloaded completely (always between 40 and 43 kb, whereas the original file size is more than 100 kb).

It does not seem to be the macro itself as it works perfect in most cases. Only consistency is that when opened directly in SharePoint, everything works fine, when opened after downloading from SharePoint, there are sometimes issues.

Do you have any suggestions what could cause this issue?

Thank you very much and best regards,
 Kathrin

Can't convert text to numbers in Excel part 2

Please refer to part 1

Now I am able to get a numeric value with provided function, but it works with only 1 parameter.  The formula column from database has calculations with multiple variables (pull from different columns) as well as +-*/().  I apologize I am not familiar with Excel and not sure if this can be done without writing programming code.

Thanks once again!

Best,

Michael Mei

Excel Connections Error Message

$

I download a file from Business Objects to a CSV file on my computer.  I have an Excel spreadsheet in which I use the Connections section (Data tab) Refresh function to import this CSV file.  This has worked for months and months.  Now, suddenly, when I click the Refresh button, I receive the following message:

"[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified".

I opened the Connections' Properties view and browsed to and entered the CSV file in the Connection File name cell.  After pressing OK, I received the following message:

"You cannot choose a connection file that is incompatible with the existing connection."

I did recently receive a new desktop at work.  IT copied my old PC files, etc. to the new PC, and I believe my machine was upgraded from 32 to 64-bit, but that is the only thing that's changed since I last used this Excel spreadsheet.

Help, please!  Can someone tell me what I need to do to get this to work properly?

Many thanks!

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to set default font face for all my users from the back-end using the Set-MailboxMessageConfiguration cmdlet but it's been throwing funny errors. I tried running the Get-MailboxMessageConfiguration cmdlet too but I was greeted with the below error message.

Has anyone encountered this before please? I've used the cmdlet successfully in a previous work environment.

We run Exchange 2013 CU 12.

Hi all!

I have experienced a Run-Time error in one of the Excel sheets that's on the network.
The problem is that the error only  returns on 2 laptops. On all other computers the sheet just works fine.

One of of the 2 laptops, i have downgraded tot excel 2010, nogo.

Tried to repair the whole office installation, even tried to reinstall the windows, nogo.

All settings in the trustcenter are the same (macro's enabled etc..)

I have found some suggestions on the Internet, but that's only for programming issue within VBA.
I don't there is anything wrong with the code, because its works fine on other computers.

Does anyone have a suggestion what i can do to resolve this issue?

Thanks a lot!

Data Source path in Pivot Table changes to absolute on its own

$

Hello.

I have a .XLSX file, that was created long time ago (I don't even know in which Office version, but definitely not 2013), and maybe even was a .XLS file at first.

So it's a 4 MB file with 16 Sheets and 8 Pivot Tables.

All of the Pivot Tables use other sheets from the same file as Data Source.

Data Source for some of them look like this: 'Sheet3'!$A:$E

Everything is fine when I save the file, and open it from saved file.

But as soon as I try to move the file elsewhere, or rename it, or email it - all Data Source paths change to something like this: '\Users\Sergii_Litnevskyi\Desktop\New folder\[FileName.xlsx]Sheet3'!$A:$E

And it happens with all Pivot Tables. The problem is that it links to an old file path, where the file does not exist anymore. And it links to an external file, which is not what I want.

If I Save As and select different path and filename - then it works fine. So it's a workaround for renaming and moving files, but not for sending them to other persons.

I've read some threads, and people recommend disabling "Save external link values", but it does not help. It is already turned off in my office, but it keeps acting weird.

So what I need is: Save the file, close it, rename it, move it to other place, send it over email as attachment. And then I want to have the same Data Source path in my PivotTables as I had before I saved the file. How can I do it?

My Office version: Microsoft Excel 2013 (15.0.4454.1503) MSO (15.0.4517.1005) 32-bit

Sharing corporate chart templates

Hi

I would like to share our corporate chart templates to personnel without to be forced to share them under user templates. I found from gpo settings registry path HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\General\charttemplates!sharedchartslocation which sounded correct. But it doesn't work. Or at least I can't get it to work. Am I missing something?

Hello to all,

I need a formulation in excel please as below :

if design target/costing target date/actual quotation send date is call from another excel sheet and yellow mark column need to enter by user. if design target is 05-04-2016 and design to costing send date is 07-04-2016 it means target date is not achieved. Then from design to costing send date whatever date is, no of days will be increase to costing target & actual quotation send date by mkt from date of design to costing send date.

Find which numbers create total

$

I'll try to make a long story short.... I get to complete the Annual Financial Report this year. Basically I am looking at last years report to know where to plugged my numbers in. Unfortunately, there is a report number that is compiled from multiple numbers and I am not sure what numbers to use. (there is no one to ask where this total came from) I have tried to figure this out manually with no avail. I was wondering if there is a formula (I am a simple formula person) I could use to tell me where they got this total. Example: 56423, 87945, 5297, 87, 478542, etc. Total is 987365. so take this multiple list and tell me which combination of numbers equal the total (or the closest to total incase the math was incorrect last year). Does this make sense and is this possible?

Thank you in advance

Cindy
