Can't open Excel 2010 Autosave file

I've got a remote user who has a rather important Excel workbook (aren't they all?? ) that he is unable to open. the file says it's an "autosave" file however the document recovery window does't appear when it's opened; double-clicking on the file opens a blank workbook. The client is running Windows 7, and when browsing to the file it becomes visible in the Preview Pane of Windows Explorer

I've followed the steps detailed at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/recover-earlier-versions-of-a-file-in-office-2010-HA010356735.aspx however I don't see any previous versions of the  file listed, and I don't see any mechanism by which I can recover the file.  I looked in c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel but this particular document did not exist there.

All of this is terribly frustrating...I can see the workbook in the preview pane and yet there doesn't seem to be any way of opening it.

Any thoughts /suggestions you may have would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Don
