Excel Compatibility Mode

Hi, 

I am using excel 2013 in Office 365.

I am downloading from Survey Monkey (Free) and it keeps downloading at Excel Microsoft 1997-2003 and then opening in Compatibility mode.  

As such not all the survey data is appearing in my excel file as it goes beyond 256 columns. Obviously, even if I convert my file in Compatibility mode then the data doesn't re-appear. 

Is the reason it is downloading at 1997-2003 a fault with my settings in excel? If so how can I change these?
