Multiple users accessing single excel file

Good day, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask but I am unsure of what to do. I use a specific excel file which is located on a shared network drive. I have it open on my computer right now, typically when we have an excel file open other users get the message that the file is in use and can open in Read-only which is what we want. But this single excel file does not give that error, more than one user can edit the document, I keep the file open on my computer but others are able to open and edit freely, I am not sharing the work book and verified that the  "Allow Changes by more than user ..." check box in Share workbook is not checked. Is there a time limit for how long I can have a file open before it releases or is this something that maybe set on the sever permissions?

This is in Excel 2010, Server it is on I believe is 2008 r2 if that helps at all.
