Discrepancy when adding a column of numbers!

Hi all,

I'm an IT contractor of 25+ years experience working support for a large multinational company and I came across interesting if not disturbing problem the other day which I'd never seen or heard of before and I wondered if anyone else had come across the same problem and had by chance found a cure?

The Problem.

I was contacted by a user in accounts who was having an issue when he highlighted a partial column in a spreadsheet. The problem was that he was getting 2 different results. When he highlighted the column top to bottom he got one figure and when he did the same but from bottom to top he got a completely different answer!?

The only thing that I could see from the selected numbers was that the negative (-) numbers were shown with brackets (1234) in the spreadsheet and the positive numbers were not. If he started the highlight of the numbers at the top it started with a -1234 number in brackets giving a bracketed number in the result (bottom right of the spreadsheet) which indicated a negative number however he got a different result if he started the highlight from the bottom which was a positive number, non bracketed, he got a positive number in the result.

There is no embedding within the spreadsheet and no linking of pages or spreadsheets. There are no formulas of any kind in any of the cells highlighted. Just -1234 or 1234 (negative or positive) numbers being added.

I be grateful for any help. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening?
