I've been using Excel 2003 to update an Excel 2003 workbook using Visual Basic macros for the past 8 years. About 2 years ago, I went from a desktop running Windows XP to a laptop running Windows 7. A year ago, I went to a laptop running Windows 8. On March 31, 2014, I had a prompt to upgrade my Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and did so.
Prior to upgrading to Windows 8.1 on the laptop, I was able to open my new version of the Excel 2003 workbook and run the update macros to copy data from the old version of the workbook on both my Windows 8 laptop running Excel 2003 and on my work desktop running Excel 2003 portable without any issues.
Since doing the upgrade to Windows 8.1, I am unable to run the copy data macros on either machine. I get an error that there is not enough memory or system resources to perform this action and I should close some applications or try again later.
I have closed/stopped ALL processes except for Excel 2003 on the laptop yet still get the error. I cannot stop all processes on my work computer but I do not have more processes running than I had prior to upgrading to Windows 8.1 on my laptop. I did have Office 365 2013 version also installed on my laptop (installed in different folder from Office 2003) and had no issues running both programs.
I have done the following to try to resolve this issue:
1. Looked to see if there were any COM add-ins started in Excel 2003, on the Windows 8.1 laptop, or the Windows XP desktop - there were none.
2. Uninstalled Office 365 2013 from the laptop.
3. Removed changes I made to the Excel 2003 workbook new version.
4. Tried running the macros using Libre Office (latest version) on my work computer instead of using Portable Excel 2003.
5. Tried to run the macros after unhiding hidden columns on workbook's 1st page (where the copy macro hangs up).
6. Tried removing ALL formatting from workbook's 1st page.
I am stumped as to what else I should try. Any help would be appreciated. Please don't tell me I should switch to Excel 2013 or 2014. I have clients who are running Excel 2003 and cannot upgrade etc.
