Pivot Table and Pivot Cache

Hello,

I've created a Pivot Table connected to SQL Server. I want to remove the data source so that I can get a clean cut off for some analysis, but keep the connection so my Pivot Table will continue to work next month/quarter/etc. I thought I could save a copy of the workbook, remove the connection to SQL, and get cut off while using the Pivot Cache to allow my cut off Pivot Table to continue to function.

When I remove the workbook connection from the Data tab under Connections, the Pivot Table loses functionality. When I go to filter or double-click to drill to detail, the error message is "The connection for this Pivot Table has been deleted." My copy of the xlsx file is about the same size as the original (13 MB), so it looks like the data is still there. Before removing the connection, I made sure that under Pivot Table | Options | Options on the Data tab that Save source data with file is checked. For good measure, I made sure Enable show details was checked and Number of items to retain per field was set to Automatic.

I thought I could rely on the Pivot Cache to allow my Pivot Table to continue to function after removing my connection to the data. What am I missing?

My data source is not an SSAS/OLAP cube, it's a connection to a view in SQL Server 2008. I'm using Excel 2010. I have another spreadsheet with a connection to a view in SQL 2008 R2 and had the same loss of functionality when I disconnected the data source. I think the data's still there, but I can't figure out how to access the Pivot Cache.

The next time I want cutoff, it seems crazy to have to double click the grand total of the Pivot Table to get the detail, then remove the connection, then build a new Pivot Table from the double-clicked data. I tried connecting a Table to the SQL view, refreshing the data on opening, disconnecting the connection to the Table, and building a Pivot Table from the Table instead of directly from the view, but that approach limits me to Excel's capacity for rows of data and my 13 MB spreadsheet is now over 70 MB.  Both of these options seems like a lot of work with potential for error. Sure would be nice if Save source with file and/or the Pivot Cache would save my data and preserve the ability to use the Pivot Table.

Any suggestions for getting Pivot Table functionality from my current cutoff spreadsheet or what to do the next time I need cutoff?

Thanks so much.
