PowerPivots Excel 2010: How do I get rid of a field without wiping out any related pivot tables?

Version:  Excel 2010 PowerPivots

Problem:  I am using a SQL table as a data source used by PowerPivots.  The PowerPivots data table created in PowerPivots Window is referenced by a pivot table.  I want to remove an out-dated field in the SQL table.  This is the process I am following, that is not working, to remove the field:

1) I remove the field from the pivot table and; then

2) I remove the field from the SQL table;

3) I refresh the related PowerPivots window data table (to the SQL source) which gives me an Error since a field in the original query is no longer present;

4) No worries, in the PowerPivot Window I go into Table Design and update the model and refresh;

5) I refresh the related Pivot Table.

The issue is after refreshing the PivotTable, all the previous fields selected for the pivot table are now gone, requiring me to completely rebuild the pivot table from scratch.

I know I'm doing something wrong.  Can anyone tell me what it is?

Thanks,

Bob Sutor
