Intermittent Excel Save problems in a Mixed Windows Client/Mac Server Environment

I have a mixed Windows Client/Mac Server environment. The Mac Server is running Mavericks Server. There are 3 Windows 8 PC clients on the network. They have a drive mapped to a folder on the Mac Server. There is an Excel file for each PC on the Mac Server. At the beginning of the day each PC opens its spreadsheet to update it. They keep the file open all day periodically saving it. Several times a day the save fails with a message like this “file is in use and cannot be saved”. We have found two solutions, reboot the server or disconnect and reconnect the PC to the network. Both allow the Excel file to be saved. Obviously this is a work around not a solution. Any ideas?
